Is homemade beef jerky safe for my dog or puppy to eat as a treat?

A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The occasional small piece of turkey deli meat as a treat is unlikely to do any harm. But I would still monitor for any signs of GI upset (like vomiting or diarrhea) and stop giving the turkey if any GI signs occur. I would also suggest only giving small amounts of the deli meat especially if your dog is a smaller dog. Giving too much could end up causing diarrhea, vomiting or in severe cases, pancreatitis.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. Since he has developed diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to prescribe an anti-diarrhea medication. Yes, homemade treats are fine. There are plenty of recipes you can find online on how to make homemade treats. All the ingredients you list are OK and there are MANY more. Just google some homemade treat recipes for dogs and go from there. Just be sure you are not feeding too many calories. A lot of treats are not good especially for small breed dogs. A lot of prepared meats contain large amounts of salt or seasonings that may upset Jasper’s stomach, and some types of seasonings can be harmful to dogs. Try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding him small amounts as treats. Treats should not make up more than 10 % of his daily caloric intake, and he should be fed a diet appropriate for puppies.

If the majority of your pups diet is a good quality puppy food ( at least 80% ), then you can supplement with the sweet potatoes, vegetables (?), & only a very small amount of pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so restrict this so as not to cause a loose stool. Also, make sure it is canned, or cooked pumpkin, & not pumpkin pie filling. Take care.

Hello and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I like to use Tricky Trainers because they are grain free and are only 4kcal/treat. They also smell amazing to dogs and seem to be quite tasty to them. You can purchase these at any major pet supplies store. I hope this helps!
