Can you hear puppy heartbeats with a stethoscope at 6 weeks pregnant?

You will not be able to feel the puppies heartbeat as they are too deep inside the mother. You can generally expect to feel movement from a large litter earlier than a smaller litter. You may begin to feel movement up to two weeks before the due date. If she only has a single puppy however you may not be able to feel much movement as the puppy will be deep inside her body. An ultrasound can detect the puppies heartbeat after 22 days from the breeding and a radiograph can see the skeletons 45 days after the breeding. Five weeks is still pretty early, even with an ultrasound it can be missed sometimes. you won't be able to hear anything with a stethoscope other than her heart beat. according to those dates she should give birth around mid March, if she is pregnant.

You are not always able to actually feel or palpate puppies externally even on a large breed dog such as a Newfoundland regardless of how close the dog is to term. The best ways to verify pregnancy (and to determine the age of the puppies) are with x-rays or ultrasound. X-rays will allow the veterinarian to determine if there is any bone development yet. The ultrasound will allow doctor to determine if the fetuses have an active heart rate.

No...not at all. 6 week kitten fetuses are small and it would be difficult to feel a lot of activity through the abdominal wall at this stage. I'm sorry no heartbeats could be found on Mishka's puppies! Unfortunately, unless the heartbeats were extremely difficult to find for some reason, it's more likely that the puppies are not alive. This can happen sometimes, and it's very sad when it does. I'm not sure how far along she is in her pregnancy, and that helps determines the next step. If she's at a later date in her pregnancy, then she will likely expel the puppies herself, although the vet may need to help with hormone injections to get her to do into labor. I would speak with your vet about options. Again, I'm very sorry.

Unfortunately you can't tell if this is a real pregnancy or a false pregnancy without an ultrasound at this stage. At 22 days, the fetal heart beats can be detected on an ultrasound. At 45 days, the fetal skeletons can be seen on an x-ray. Depending on the size of the mother and the amount of puppies, the fetuses may be palpated in the final weeks of pregnancy. It is possible that this is a false pregnancy, but the only way to really tell is with an x-ray or ultrasound exam. At this point of her pregnancy it may be difficult to feel individual puppies, especially due to size of the puppies & if this is a rather large litter. An increased respiratory rate could be a direct result of her pregnancy putting increased pressure on her diaphragm. I think it is well worth an x-ray to know how many puppies are there.
