My dog is pregnant, scan shows puppies but no heartbeats. What now?

You will not be able to feel the puppies heartbeat as they are too deep inside the mother. You can generally expect to feel movement from a large litter earlier than a smaller litter. You may begin to feel movement up to two weeks before the due date. If she only has a single puppy however you may not be able to feel much movement as the puppy will be deep inside her body. An ultrasound can detect the puppies heartbeat after 22 days from the breeding and a radiograph can see the skeletons 45 days after the breeding. The puppies are either reabsorbed into the body or the dog will pass them. If she was almost full term you can take her to the vet to check for any puppies still present in the uterus with an X-ray. Causes of miscarriage are: uterine infections, brucellosis, genetic issues with the puppies, other viral or bacterial infections and medications Snoopy may have received during pregnancy. If she is sick she should see a veterinarian. Any puppies that are full term and remain in the uterus will cause her to be sick. I wish you the best!

You can try to repeat the x rays in a week time, usually mineralization of bones starts from 36-40th day of pregnancy. If no puppies are seen on the second x rays, it is possible that either she is not pregnant or the puppies got died and got reabsorbed. It appears indeed that your pug had a miscarriage. Hopefully she will give birth to the rest of the dead puppies within the next few hours. Take her back to the vet in the morning to make sure she has had all puppies and does not have an infection. If there are more puppies and no progression of labor at this point then she needs to be seen by a vet. They have medication to give her to stimulate further contractions to continue the process. They can also X-ray her to see how many are there or do a c section if needed Since she didn’t take care of the precious puppies it is best to not let her have any puppies and bottle raise them yourself then get her spayed
