My Newfoundlander is 7 weeks pregnant, but I can't feel puppies?

You will not be able to feel the puppies heartbeat as they are too deep inside the mother. You can generally expect to feel movement from a large litter earlier than a smaller litter. You may begin to feel movement up to two weeks before the due date. If she only has a single puppy however you may not be able to feel much movement as the puppy will be deep inside her body. An ultrasound can detect the puppies heartbeat after 22 days from the breeding and a radiograph can see the skeletons 45 days after the breeding. You can feel the puppies typically around the 6th week of pregnancy (days 35-42), but she could be further along than that. A dog's typical gestation length is 58-68 days. I would have Chloe seen by a vet to have her pregnancy confirmed, and the vet can do x-rays or an ultrasound to see how far along she is in her pregnancy.

Sometimes you can feel the puppies move but in some dogs you can't, it depends if your dog is large, fat or lean and it is usually possible toward the last trimester only (more than 50 days of pregnancy).

It is possible that this is a false pregnancy, but the only way to really tell is with an x-ray or ultrasound exam. At this point of her pregnancy it may be difficult to feel individual puppies, especially due to size of the puppies & if this is a rather large litter. An increased respiratory rate could be a direct result of her pregnancy putting increased pressure on her diaphragm. I think it is well worth an x-ray to know how many puppies are there. Based on your information, the latest possible day for fertilization of eggs with sperm would be July 26 (sperm can hang out up to 5 days to fertilize the eggs). An ultrasound can detect pregnancy after 28 days, and x-rays can be used after 45 days. It seems like it was too early to see any fetal skeletal development on Sept 1. I would recommend another x-ray next week to confirm if a true or false pregnancy. You can't judge if a dog is pregnant based on the size of their belly alone. An enlarged belly can happen with other things, like organ enlargement, cancer, or an infected uterus.

You can try to repeat the x rays in a week time, usually mineralization of bones starts from 36-40th day of pregnancy. If no puppies are seen on the second x rays, it is possible that either she is not pregnant or the puppies got died and got reabsorbed.
