Is my 3-month-old GSD puppy purebred? When will his ears stand?

Hello. Teddy is a very handsome boy. He does look like a German Shepherd, but it is possible he has a very small amount of another breed in him. It is also possible that he had some issues when he was a puppy that affected the cartilage in his ears, & this is what is preventing them from standing erect. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Oscar. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. His fluffy hair coat makes it difficult to assess his weight from a picture. He will be examined, dewormed and started on his vaccines and likely heartworm prevention as well. His weight and diet can be discussed as well. I would not expect his ears to stand up for several weeks yet. I hope this information helps!

Looks can be deceiving but these photos do look like purebred dogs. It’s hard to say if they are working or show lines. I recommend to call the breeder as they are most familiar with their bloodlines. You can also contact the breed club as they likely have excellent resources. No. You can only get a purebred German Shepherd if both the mother and father are 100% German Shepherd. This puppy is 7/8 German Shepherd and 1/8 mixed breed. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Typically, if a GSD's ears have not stood up by 6-8 months it is likely that they will not stand up at all. There are however, some taping methods that can assist the ears to stand up. You should talk to your veterinarian before taping the ears because it may make your puppies prone to developing ear infections. The amount of cartilage in a puppy's ears is determined at birth. Oral or injectable supplements will not affect the amount of cartilage in the ears.

I wouldn’t be concerned at this time about his ears as he is still young and growing. It is also normal for his baby teeth to fall out- and all should have fallen out by 6 months.
