Why is my 10-month Great Dane getting sores on his face and legs?

Place an e-collar (cone) on Charlie to prevent pawing or rubbing. You can purchase one from your veterinarian or at most pet stores. This may be enough to allow healing, but if the area spreads or does not heal then she should be seen by your veterinarian. It may be localized bacterial or fungal infection or it could be a mite infection.

This area resembles a localized skin infection most likely caused by a bacteria that normally lives on his skin. It is quite red around the area so if you notice that these areas are spreading, getting worse and not improving, you should have your veterinarian evaluate Yeti. They can get a thorough history and then examine Yeti and the affected areas. Skin problems have many causes including bacterial infections, allergies, flea/tick/insect bites/stings, trauma, fungal infections, problems with mites, or even internal problems that present with skin involvement. Your vet can advise whether diagnostics are needed (skin tests, blood tests, etc) or if a treatment plan is indicated based on what they observe. Good luck with Yeti.

Allergy is one of the top differential diagnois. Other possible differntials are pyodermitis (bacterial infection of the skin), superficial trauma, skin inflammation due to eccesive licking, presence of parassites. Others less probable causes are neoplastic and fungal diseases. I would recommend to try to prevent licking (with an elizabethan collar) of the affected area and a check up with your local vet if the lesion won't improve in the next 36-48 hrs.

Hello, sorry to hear about Sophie. It looks like she could be having inflammation of her skin at that area either due to an autoimmune disease, decrease in zinc levels, or an infection. If this problem has persisted for some time, it may be reasonable to speak with your veterinarian about consulting with a dermatologist. Diagnostics may include biopsies of the area. It looks like he could have a bacterial skin infection which could be related to allergies. You could bath him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps. Otherwise, have him examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help.

Poor Diesel! Is he painful? You need to take him to your vet. In an older Great Dane, I am so sorry to tell you this but I would be most concerned about a possible bone tumor. Take him to your vet for an exam--they will likely recommend taking an X-ray. They can also prescribe some medication to help with pain. Don't hesitate to post again if you have any other questions.
