My dog has a round sore on his leg and ear. What should I do?

You can try to shave around it and clean it. If it continues to look superficial (as it looks on the picture), you can consider applying a thin film of triple antibiotic on it in case it is just a mild infection. Poor Lazarus! This could be a bacterial or fungal skin infection, an allergy-related skin lesion, or a localized inflammatory reaction due to an insect bite or something similar. It's even possible that it could be a skin growth or tumor of some kind, especially if it feels raised vs. flat when you touch it. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first. I would recommend taking Lazarus to the vet for an exam. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed. to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection or secondary to an injury that has not healed, among other possibilities. You can use an e-collar to try to prevent further self trauma. I recommend that you have Tink evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Tink, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!

The likely secondary infections need to to be addressed and the itchiness also need to be addressed to prevent this issue from getting worse. Medications like prednisone can be used for the itchiness and antibiotics for the infections. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar in the meantime to prevent further self-trauma. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello, this looks like a local irritation. If he wears a harness, you may need to adjust it or leave it off for a couple of days. Rubbing a small dab of 1% cortisone cream on the area twice a day should help, but stop after 72 hours, or sooner if the area becomes more irritated or redder. Hello. It is very difficult to determine what is going on with the leg, but the area looks like some kind of raised lesion. I think this is a good one to have your veterinarian take a hands-on look to make sure everything is OK. I hesitate to tell you to take a watch & wait approach with this.
