My Great Dane puppy has a sore on her muzzle from licking. Should I see a vet?

It looks like he might have an allergic dermatitis and skin infection. It would be best to have your vet take a look at him to determine the best way to treat. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, culture, or biopsy, if needed, to help diagnose. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or other medications to help treat. You could also bathe him with a medicated shampoo, like DOUXO® Chlorhexidine and see if that helps.

Any topical product you apply will promptly be licked off. This could be localized infection or inflammation. An allergic reaction or mass cannot be ruled out by image alone. Legally, we are prohibited from telling to medicate the spot in the absence of a physical exam. Ideally, Lana should be physically examined by your veterinarian for a firm diagnosis. She may need systemic treatment as opposed to topical. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible. Wipe her mouth after she drinks or eats.

Hello, sorry to hear about Sophie. It looks like she could be having inflammation of her skin at that area either due to an autoimmune disease, decrease in zinc levels, or an infection. If this problem has persisted for some time, it may be reasonable to speak with your veterinarian about consulting with a dermatologist. Diagnostics may include biopsies of the area. It sounds as though Frank is really preventing his sore from healing. I would recommend placing a cone/e-collar on him to prevent him from rubbing his face. You may also want to talk to your veterinarian about using a topical ointment/antibiotic to help it heal more quickly. An ointment may help reduce irritation which in turn may stop him from rubbing.

Hello. This looks like a bacterial infection that she picked up. If it is not bothering her much, then I would just pick up some Hibiclens at the pharmacy & gently clean the area a couple of time a day. Sounds like Misty is feeling pretty rough! Just under the nose is a hard place to stop licking, as you can't use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to stop her from doing so. You may need to try to distract misty with a chew toy instead that she can put her energy into to help prevent her from licking the spot. if it is very raw and sore, you may also want to have your vet take a look to make sure there isn't an infection or other irritation that should be treated. Your vet may also be able to recommend a no-lick spray or bandage that may be suitable around the nose, as well. Avoid putting any home remedies on the spot, as it may just increase irritation which will increase licking and stop the area from healing.
