Why is my 4-month Goldendoodle puppy wobbly and walking off balance?

I'm so sorry that George is having this problem. I certainly understand how scary it can be when your dog is not feeling well and you don't know what is going on. Unfortunately, the signs you are describing could be caused by a large number of things, so it's impossible for me to tell you what is going on without George having an examination. George certainly could be having a problem with his vestibular apparatus which controls his balance. Vestibular disease can cause nausea, so dogs will need medication to resolve the nausea if that is the case. What you're describing could be hip disease, spinal cord issues or even an infection. If it doesn't get better over the next few days he needs to get checked out by your veterinarian, sooner if if gets worse or he seems painful.

I would recommend having Dobby examined by a vet to determine what is going on. Balance is controlled by the vestibular part of the brain. Inner ear infections can cause issues with balance as well. A thorough physical, ear, and neurologic examination will help clue your vet into the cause of the balance issues.

Hello Aim. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry that Cooper is not well. This is definitely not normal. Dogs do get something called vestibular disease (a king of vertigo) that can throw their balance off but it usually happens in older dogs. I have never seen it in a 4 year old dog. I would be very worried that he may have ingested something toxic. I really think you should get him examined by a vet as soon as possible.

So, potential serious concerns would be 1. poisoning (ie antifreeze, pot, chemicals, rotten carcasses, etc.) 2. seizures (dogs get epilepsy and it commonly presents in puppies 3. metabolic issue like a liver shunt can cause neurologic symptoms 4. trauma to the brain like being hit by a car. Any neurologic symptoms are very serious and I would take him to an emergency veterinarian for a full workup.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Puppies, just like kids, have different interests in food. Some will eat all the time, and others don't care as much. As long as he isn't too thin and is having normal poops, then just let him eat when he wants and don't worry too much about it. Puppies do sleep a lot so that is normal. In terms of him being wobbly, or off balance, this is definitely not normal. I would strongly recommend getting a video of the wobbliness and bring this to your vet to show them. It could be just puppy behaviour, however true 'ataxia' (wobbliness and off balance) is a concern, vs. just a clumsy puppy. This could indicate a congenital malformation in his brain, neck or spine, or possibly liver. Best of luck with Zeus!

This is not normal. Please have Boots seen by a vet right away. She may be dealing with a neurological issue due to trauma, infection, or other causes. Puppies can also develop potentially fatal dehydration and low blood sugar fairly quickly, so it is important to have Boots seen by a vet. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!
