Why is my puppy having mucus stool and crate accidents? Is it his food?

We can have diarrhea due to stress (of a move to new home) or diet changes, however in young dogs we also worry about intestinal parasites (both worms and Protozoa that aren't killed by deworming) and in some cases depending on vaccine status parvovirus. For this reason it is best to have your pup checked at the vet and bring a stool sample for them to test. Until then you can pick up a probiotic for dogs at the vet or pet store and try feeding plain cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day or two.

There is always some mucus in stool. It aids in defecation. An increased amount can be due to some inflammation in the intestine. If she had intestinal parasites and was recently treated, this could be the cause. If she is behaving normally, you can monitor her at home. Consider a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity. Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.

This is very concerning as it appears to contain blood, mucus and possibly bowel lining. I recommend an oral worm medication, a specialist intestinal or hydrolyzed diet for 6 weeks and a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora to rebalance the bowel and rule out any parasitic causes. A full health check, blood tests and possibly ultrasound/xray if not responding or any weight loss, vomiting or weakness is noted

Yes this could be definitively due to diet. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. Hello. If you have access to a good probiotic for dogs, then I would start this immediately. If no dog probiotics, then the human product, Culturelle, is fine to use. Just use the adult recommended dose. I would also make sure they only receive bottled water, or water that has been boiled & cooled. Make sure they have no access to any standing water outside. If your veterinarian can send off a stool sample to test for other organisms that cause diarrhea ( this is usually referred to as a PCR Diarrhea Panel ), this would be very useful, too.
