My dog is sick. Why are gnats gathering around her face and mouth?

Fly-snapping and other unusual behavior can be indicative of a neurologic problem of some kind, which could also explain why she has been acting lethargic and not responding the way she usually does when you talk to her. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she can do a full neurologic exam to help determine if something is wrong, and may recommend some additional testing if needed to help diagnose the specific problem.

She could be experiencing nausea that is making her retch, gag and lick her lips. Other times these noises can actually be related to an upper respiratory tract infection. Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. He could have an infected tooth/teeth and need extractions and a dental cleaning as soon as possible. Infected gums and teeth can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream that can adversely affect your dog's heart. This problem needs to be addressed now.

Poor Rosie. This foul odor around her mouth could be due to a broken tooth or an infected tooth, and that would prevent her from eating well. It would also make her lethargic. She needs to see a vet now, please take her into one immediately.

There are a number of different things that could cause problems with closing the mouth and excessive drooling like this, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her. Some common possibilities would include an injury to the mouth or jaw, a tumor or infection in the mouth, or a neurologic problem such as a stroke. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam today, if possible, since some of these problems can be quite serious. Your vet can do a complete neurologic exam and may also sedate her so that a thorough oral exam can be performed as well. Once a diagnosis is made, he/she can talk to you about what treatment will be needed.

You can gently clean the area with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution once or twice daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards. Place an e-collar (cone) on Milly to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the spot doesn't begin to resolve in a few days. Have her physically examined by your veterinarian. She may need systemic antibiotics. A biopsy may also be recommended to rule out malignancy or autoimmune disorders.
