My French bulldog is shedding skin. What could be causing this?

That is unusual. It's possible he is experiencing some changes in his hormones. Environmental allergies and melatonin responsive dermatosis are also possible. I recommend to start with a physical exam with his veterinarian. This will help to get the process started to determine the cause. He could be experiencing a skin infection secondary to allergies, fleas, or a problem due to ringworm or mites. His veterinarian will examine him and may recommend skin tests. From there, medications can be prescribed to help him feel better. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe his skin. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for posting your question. I see Otis is a 1yr old French Bulldog and the pictures seem to show several red bumps on his abdomen. Where I practice we do see quite a few French bulldogs with environmental allergies. However, that being said there are multiple causes for the bumps that you are seeing. One possible explanation could be a simple environmental allergy. I see that your veterinarian had started Otis on topical shampoo therapy along with oral antibiotics. This is a good approach, and sometimes this can take some time to get results for the problem to resolve. It does appear based on your pictures that Otis may have a skin infection. The topical shampoo and antibiotics will typically treat this. However, sometimes you have to switch to a different antibiotic and shampoo if it has not resolved with the instructed course of treatment. Also, being 1yr old, skin mites such as demodex and Sarcoptic mange (as you have already mentioned) may also be the culprit. If a skin scraping has not been performed, then I would have your veterinarian do this as the current medications will not treat mites. I would also recommend fish oil (such as welactin), dermoscent essential 6 spot on and duoxo chlorhexidine and PS combination shampoo all of which can be found on Amazon.

Poor Lebron! It's true that skin problems like this can be caused by a number of different things. Usually, some diagnostic testing (such as a skin scrape, cytology, possible bacterial or fungal culture, etc.) is needed to determine what the problem is - so I'm wondering if any tests were done at your vet visit, or if any medications were prescribed to try and treat the problem. If not, I would recommend taking Lebron back for a recheck visit, or seeking a second opinion from another vet. It's likely that he will need prescription medication such as a steroid and/or antibiotic in order to treat the problem, depending on what the testing shows.

That doesn't appear to be ringworm. It could be a bacterial skin infection. Given that he has allergies, this makes bacterial infection more likely. You would need to have this confirmed by your veterinarian. Treatment may be systemic antibiotics, topical treatment or a combination of both. Getting the allergies under control would probably help as well. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use with your vet.

It looks like Banjo has a skin infection. These are usually bacterial in nature, but sometimes it can be from a fungus or yeast. Banjo should see a veterinarian for an exam and treatment. Infectious skin diseases are certainly high on the list of possible causes here, especially fungal diseases. Cancer would not spread to everyone in this manner, so that is low on the list of possibilities. I probably would've opted for a punch biopsy however, which can offer more insight into what this is. Also a bacterial culture should be considered. Mange doesn't typically present in this manner, but with a punch biopsy you can help rule this in or out. A needle biopsy unfortuantely will only let you know if there are cancerous cells or not.
