Why is my French Bulldog losing hair and it's growing back different?

A fungal infection such as ringworm or an overgrowth of mites known as demodex can both cause the skin to look this way. Hair loss can occur for a number of reasons including mange, fleas, allergies and hormonal imbalances such as low thyroid levels. I would ensure you are using a high-quality flea preventative. If the bald patches are getting worse, I would recommend that you have Ella seen by a veterinarian. They may perform a skin scraping or even recommended skin biopsy to get a better idea of what's going on.

Some dogs can have color changes to their coats as they age and it isn't necessarily a medical issue. It is wise, however, to get your dog checked out to be sure the skin under the fur is all normal and not causing a changing appearance to the coat. The skin of dogs can darken due to inflammation and infection and this can make the coat appear darker in color.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

That spot on Harvey could be several things including allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Hopefully this is a good sign that his body is fighting the cause since it appears to be healing. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil once a day and rub in well (do not allow him to lick the area afterwards). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Lou is adorable! Unfortunately Frenchies are notorious for developing both environmental allergies (atopy) and food allergies. These signs can be especially apparent during seasonal weather changes. Other issues, like secondary bacterial or mite infections could be causing hair loss. It would be best to have Lou examined by a veterinarian to evaluate for infection and to prescribe medications to help relieve the itch. There are newer, safer medications available for allergies like Cytopoint that have been proven very successful. Lou may need a medicated shampoo or even oral anti- fungal or antibiotics is infection is present. Until you can get to your veterinarian you can try bathing with a soothing shampoo like Douxo Calm to provide some relief for Lou. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If a hydrolyzed diet was not used, I would switch to a food such as Hills Z/D or Royal Canin Ultamino and feed for 4-6 weeks. If there is no improvement, you may need to consider drug therapy such as cytopoint, apoquel, atopica, etc. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
