My French bulldog has crusty bumps and scabs all over. What is it?

Small bumps like this on the skin are usually a sign of a bacterial skin infection called pyoderma - this can occur on its own, or due to an underlying skin problem like allergies or skin mites (mange). You can try bathing her in a chlorhexidine dog shampoo to see if this helps. If not, or if the bumps seems to be spreading or if they become itchy or painful, it would be best to have her examined by a vet. He/she can do a simple test called a skin scrape to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

 There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

These kind of problems happen to some puppies and they often go away once the puppy gets older. You could try and use antibiotic cream or ointment on the skin for 7-10 days - it will likely help. However, the skin problem may come back a few weeks later.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This appears to be an allergic reaction but of course without examining him in person it is hard for me to say for sure. If he has bumps anywhere else on his body then you should take him to a vet now. If only the ear flaps are affected then you can give him one 25mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) tablet every 12 hours for the next 48 hours to see if it helps. If not, take him to your vet. You can also get this product from your local Petco and just put it on the affected area of the ear flaps once a day. Call Petco first as many stores don't keep it in stock, only online. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Biscuits regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or apoquel in order to stop the allergy.

This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

It could be a pyoderma (skin infection). See your veterinarian for an exam. He or she may diagnose bacterial or fungal skin infection and can prescribe the appropriate medication afterwards. Treatment may be topical, systemic or a combination. Consider adding an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to her diet to promote healthy skin and coat. Place an e-collar (cone) on your dog if she is licking or chewing excessively.
