Is my French Bulldog puppy's morning cough and nasal mucus normal?

I'd have him seen by a vet tomorrow. He could have a respiratory infection or could be suffering from kennel cough. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms and can treat him for it. As an aside, this could also be normal. He's a French bulldog, and due to their flatter face, they often make many noises like this. Still it's best to have him checked out to be safe. It may just be a mild upper respiratory infection, but a foreign body, like a piece of grass, is also a possibility. Poor guy. It is possible he has a mild irritation of his upper airway. Wait things out a bit and just continue to monitor him throughout the day to see if the congestion improves. If it doesn't get better or if his symptoms worsen (i.e. Coughing, labored breathing, etc) then it's best to take Ginme to your vet. Upper respiratory infections (kennel cough) are common in puppies and the symptoms mimic cold like symptoms in people, but the difference is that antibiotics are used to resolve symptoms.

However, while general allergies can cause a cough, this would be a bit unusual and other possible causes of coughing like pneumonia, bronchitis, and heart failure should be investigated. The coughing could also be due to pneumonitis secondary to exposure to the cleaning products. I recommend that you have Pacino evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

This difficulty breathing could be related to his bronchitis, but the conformation of his nostrils and soft palate could be contributing to it as well. Because of his flat face, Jax will have an undersized throat and breathing passages, and when there is inflammation in the airways, it will be even harder for him to breathe. If he's congested, he may need bronchodilator, and you'd have to speak to your vet for a prescription for that. At home, you you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. When he's better from the bronchitis, it would be worth a discussion with your vet about his facial conformation. If he has stenotic nares, an elongated soft palate, and everted laryngeal saccules, having surgery done to correct this things will help with his breathing in the future.

I'm assuming that Lana is small enough to be flying in the cabin with you - if so, I would not expect her to have any trouble with the flight, even if she has a mild upper respiratory infection. You could try bringing her into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower prior to going to the airport, as the steam and humidity will often help to break up nasal congestion and temporarily relieve her symptoms. I would also suggest taking a washcloth with you on the plane so that you can clean away any discharge on her nose if needed, to make sure that she doesn't have any trouble breathing. Otherwise, as long as she's acting normal, she should be just fine :)
