My French Bulldog's dry nose. Oral remedies if I can't touch it?

This is common in this breed. You can apply Bag balm to the nose once a day to help with this. After a few weeks of use it should improve, however if it doesn't then an immune mediated disorder (i..e Lupus) may be the cause, and its best to get the area tested through your vet for further treatment options.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Murphy. A common condition known as hyperkeratosis can cause a crusty nose. This is more of a cosmetic probelm and may be what his veterinarian was referring to at your last appointment. If the nose cracks, bleeds or the pigment changes to white or pink though, this is concerning. It can indicate an autoimmune disease. This would need to be diagnosed with a biopsy. In the first scenario, I usually will treat with a topical ointment to dissolve the extra skin or keratin. You need to wear gloves when applying it though as it can dissolve the skin on your finger tips. His veterinarian will be able to prescribe this ointment. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to say from the picture for sure what it is but I would suspect this to be mostly due to the dry nose. I would recommend using a product called Biobalm by Dermoscent. You can find this online quite easily. I woyld apply this 2 to 3 times daily and see if this helps. I hope this helps! Lesions on dog's noses can be dry skin, allergies, hyperkeratosis or autoimmune disease. At home you can try giving her an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets but it may not correct the underlying cause. This can however improve over all skin health. There are two brands of food, Royal Canin and Nutro, which are aimed at skin health and they may help as well but again, they may not affect the underlying problem. Breeds like French Bulldogs, Boxers and English Bulldogs are prone to skin abnormalities around their muzzles. They can have issues with acne, infected hair follicles, ingrown hairs and sometimes even allergies. Jack has some pretty big lesions so I recommend to have him checked out by his veterinarian as he may need systemic medication to address inflammation and possibly infection. Talk to the doctor about topical treatment that you can provide on a routine basis. Keeping his muzzle clean and dry will also help to prevent this moving forward. You could try using a small amount of Vaseline or Bag Balm on this area to help with the dryness - some dogs will try to rub off any topical medications that might be applied, unfortunately, so I can't say if he will leave these alone or not. Normally, using only a small amount is best, so that it doesn't feel sticky and strange to the dog :)

Hello, and thank you for your question. Possible causes of Frankie's lip issue include a bacterial infection, fungal infection, parasites such as mites, or underlying allergies. Frenchies have deep skin folds on the face, which makes them predisposed to these types of skin issues. The location of the lesion makes it difficult to treat topically, so I would recommend taking Frankie to the vet to be assessed. They may recommend a skin scraping or cytology to rule out some of the above possibilities. At minimum, they can prescribe antibiotics if an infection is suspected, and anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce the redness and itchiness. A hypoallergenic diet trial may also be recommended. In the meantime, you can try gently cleansing the area with a wet puppy wipe. Try to keep him from rubbing or scratching at the face - an e-collar (cone) may be needed for this purpose. I hope this helps, and that Frankie feels better soon!
