Should I worry about black spots on my French Bulldog's skin?

Black spots on the skin are often an indicator of inflammation. I would recommend that you have Chanel examined by a vet. Bulldogs are notorious from having many different types of skin issues, and early treatment may limit some of their severity. The vet will do a thorough exam, and may take a sample to examine under a microscope, which can check for mites, bacteria, and yeast.

Breeds like French Bulldogs, Boxers and English Bulldogs are prone to skin abnormalities around their muzzles. They can have issues with acne, infected hair follicles, ingrown hairs and sometimes even allergies. Jack has some pretty big lesions so I recommend to have him checked out by his veterinarian as he may need systemic medication to address inflammation and possibly infection. Talk to the doctor about topical treatment that you can provide on a routine basis. Keeping his muzzle clean and dry will also help to prevent this moving forward. Jack being an English Bulldog, this is possibly due to allergies if associated with itchiness or just a normal change in skin pigmentation which may be just transient. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It’s difficult to know how to advise without a photo. Pets can get more dark pigment on their skin as they age. Other causes of pigmentation our inflammation, allergies, drama and minor infection’s. That looks like a very inflamed ulcer or a wound. I do recommend to have that examined by the veterinarian. Kona will likely get a medicated ointment to decrease the inflammation. I hope it clears up quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.
