My dog has strange bumps with black spots in his fur. What is it?

Any bump or mass on a dog should be examined by a veterinarian in person. Your vet can perform an exam and a fine-needle aspirate of the mass - where he/she uses a needle and syringe to sample cells from the mass and look at them under a microscope. This way, your veterinarian can determine what type of mass that is and then recommend treatment. I hope this is helpful!

I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are malignant (cancerous) or benign. This distinction would determine a treatment plan as to whether or not surgical removal may be necessary. From the picture you posted, the black marks under his skin appear to be normal epithelial pigmentation, but if you are concerned I would have your veterinarian see those as well. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to say with out seeing a picture or examining Charlie. I always recommend any new skin bump be looked at by your Vet. If you want to watch it that is fine, but if it changes or rapidly grows it should be looked at. Sadly both benign and cancerous growth can look the same. I am afraid without at least a photo or description of where these lumps and blackheads are, what size and how long they have been present, I cannot determine the cause, possibly identify them nor how to treat them or suggest whether they need to be examined by a vet or not. This could be anything from cancer, allergic reaction, comedones caused by hyperadrenocorticism to ectoparasite bites or insect stings or bites. I suggest you take a few good photos and upload them here and describe them and I am sure we can give you an idea about what they are and what to do about them or whether you need to worry at all.

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have Bowser evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!
