Just found a puppy! How do I check its age, breed, and health?

To better predict his age, it would be helpful to examine his mouth specifically his dentition. However, he is probably about 3 months old. Good luck and have a great day!

From the pictures, it does look like he may be a german shepherd or similar breed It is hard to estimate age from pictures, but he is clearly young (under a year). I would recommend if he was found, he be taken to a veterinary office for a check-up and to be scanned for a microchip.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! He is a mixed breed dog but a predominant breed is hard to guess as he looks very well mixed. I would say that he has some characteristics of a Newfoundland and a Bernese mountain dog. I would say that he is likely to be a medium-sized breed dog to perhaps a bit larger. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Chowder is very cute! I think he is too young to tell and we would need more pictures. For fun if you want to run a home DNA test you can buy them online. I don't find them very accurate though. If you want to send more pictures or post a gain when he/s bigger it may help. Hello. The very best thing to do is make an appointment with your veterinarian for a thorough health check-up. Your veterinarian will listen to Dash's heart & lungs, look at his eyes & ears, palpate his abdomen, conduct a fecal analysis looking for intestinal worms & parasites, & recommend when appropriate vaccinations should be given. At this time, your veterinarian will discuss diet, possible neuter surgery & preventatives to protect your puppy from heartworm infection. Thank you for taking care of this dog, He is a sweet looking dog, From the photo he looks like a poodle mix, however your vet will be able to give you a better idea of what breed he is when he does a hands on exam, as he can see the whole dog, size and physique, which is not visible on the photo The same is with estimated age. The vet will also look at his teeth and will be able to tell you whether it is a young dog or an older one , and may be able to pinpoint an age range. If you cannot find out whether he was vaccinated, you can have him vaccinated and wormed at your vet. You may want to give him a bath and a brush before taking him to the vet, so he is presentable and it will be easier to examine him. Again, thank you for saving this little fellow.
