Why is my 6-month-old female golden retriever puppy mounting?

This is a good question. This may be unrelated to being intact, but in dogs that have early signs of aggression, I find that neutering ASAP can cause those signs to improve. Sometimes mounting behavior will continue (and even seen in females) but if there are other signs of aggression I would neuter immediately and also consider calling a positive reinforcement based trainer. How cute is Bailey!!! I recommend spaying Bailey at 6 months of age. This will allow her to be spayed before her first heat cycle. The pros about spaying her at 6 months is decrease risk of breast cancer when she is older, decrease risk of pyometra ( pus filled uterus) and patients recover faster/ faster surgery due to smaller blood vessels and less fat. Some recent studies in the U.K. Recommend spaying at 1 year of age to decrease issues with bones but as a general practice I do not see this helping in most of my patients.

Since they are both neutered, this behavior is likely caused by over-stimulation. It's not sexual, it's just an inappropriate outlet for being overwhelmed or overexcited -- think really tired toddler starting to throw things and hit his friends. I would recommend redirecting him to a toy or playing with you, or remove him calmly from the situation. You don't want to punish him for the behavior, but you do want to stop it.

It is purely for dominance in the encounter or relationship. I would recommend to get her spayed as soon as you are able to so you can avoid accidental breeding for her.

If your female dog isn't spayed, she could be coming into heat causing this behavior. Female dogs go into heat around every six months, and if you have had her for five months, it would be about time to go into heat again. This behavior will continue every six months unless you get her spayed, which I highly recommend getting done. Best of luck!
