My neutered dog mounts my puppy. Is she in heat? Should I spay?

Since they are both neutered, this behavior is likely caused by over-stimulation. It's not sexual, it's just an inappropriate outlet for being overwhelmed or overexcited -- think really tired toddler starting to throw things and hit his friends. I would recommend redirecting him to a toy or playing with you, or remove him calmly from the situation. You don't want to punish him for the behavior, but you do want to stop it.

This is a good question. This may be unrelated to being intact, but in dogs that have early signs of aggression, I find that neutering ASAP can cause those signs to improve. Sometimes mounting behavior will continue (and even seen in females) but if there are other signs of aggression I would neuter immediately and also consider calling a positive reinforcement based trainer. Hello there! I understand the frustration of having an unneutered male dog. They don't have hormone cycles like females do, so they don't have a "heat" like females do. Essentially, their hormone levels are the same all the time, which can be even more frustrating. Mounting behavior is not all hormonal, and does have a component of dominance (so he may still do this even after he's neutered). Even females will mount other dogs if they want to express their dominance over them. The mounting behavior will hopefully abate once a dominance hierarchy is established in your home between the dogs, but not necessarily. It can also spur fights, so be watchful over your dogs when they are together, and I recommend against leaving them alone together until you are comfortable with Shadow's personality and interactions with your older dog. Neutering may help, but it takes a long time for those hormones to get out of their system (at least a month), so in the meantime, consistent training can be helpful in stopping the behavior. I have seen some trainers keep a leash and harness on a dog that jumps or mounts, so that when the dog starts to jump up, they can step on the leash and prevent it. It's important to have another task for your dog to do instead of jumping/mounting, so starting off with teaching a solid "sit" could be helpful. Reward him with a treat for any positive behavior, and ignore undesired behavior. I highly recommend contacting a good trainer or veterinary behaviorist if the behavior continues. Hello. He is just being a male dog. Even after neutering, some males may still try to mount females, but in his case, he is still strongly attracted to your spayed female. If you do not plan on neutering the male, keep an eye on the male as the female can get annoyed at him & you may have a fight on your hands. If your male is still quite young, he may mature out of this behavior as his instincts are very strong right now. Just keep an eye on him. This behavior is often considered part of a dominance issue and can be seen amongst any dogs, even neutered dogs occasionally. Be aware that your puppy will be able to mate very shortly and you should consider neutering her or making arrangements to keep them separated for 3weeks when she comes in heat next
