My female dog has swelling and scabs around her bottom. What's wrong?

I looks like Bailey could have a cyst or skin infection on her vulva. I would recommend having your vet examine her, especially if she has been licking her vulva. This could be a sign of allergies or even a urinary tract infection, or it may be something you can treat topically and monitor.

There are a few things that could be going on: 1. She could be having a false pregnancy. 2. She could be having a real pregnancy. 3. She could have a uterine infection - called pyometra. 4. She could have something completely unrelated to the reproductive tract. I think you should get her a vet for an exam. If she is pregnant you need to know about it so you can estimate when she may give birth. If she has a uterine infection this can be life-threatening and she needs to get treatment ASAP. A false pregnancy may or may not resolve on it's own. If it is something else, she needs the proper treatment. So, regardless of the underlying cause, she needs an exam. I hope this helps. I am sorry Bailey is not feeling well. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to have the rectum area examine. A blood filled sac is never considered normal and in an older patient could be many things. An infection, trauma, cancers and non cancerous masses can occur around the rectum area.

When dogs scoot it’s often a sign that their anal sacs are full or infected. These are like the scent glands of a skunk. Usually they are emptied when the dog goes to the bathroom. If they fill up they cause itching and scooting. I recommend you take your dog in and have your veterinarian express her anal sacs. They can then prescribe medication to control the itching if needed. Also spayed female dogs can get low hormone levels causing urine leakage. There is daily medication you can give to control this. If Molly is not spayed, I would have her examined by a vet ASAP. It is possible there are issues such as a urinary infection, pyometra (infection of the uterus), prolapse (if things are protruding) or even additional issues such as parasites trying to bury in the skin. Since there is also blood present, it'd be best to have her checked out. Other signs to look out for include lethargy, fever, changes in eating or drinking, additional discharge, increased urination, and cloudy/bloody urine.

Oh dear, poor Sadie! Her skin issues coupled with the redness and swelling of her anus and vulva could be due to underlying allergies to fleas, food or the environment. I see that she has not been spayed, so it is also possible that her vulva is red and swollen if she is going into heat. The anus can be red and irritated from parasites or anal gland issues, as well. At this point, I recommend assuring that Sadie is receiving a high quality flea preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II). You can try bathing her in a gentle oatmeal shampoo or antimicrobial shampoo, but she will likely need to go to her vet for an exam. The vet will be able to assess her changes and determine if a skin infection is present as a result of her ongoing itching. She may need to have a course of antibiotics and anti-itch medications to help resolve this issue. I hope that all goes well!
