Why is my dog bleeding after anal gland expression? Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 9 months old | 29 lbs

Bell had her anal glands expressed yesterday noon. She passed quite a bit of blood in the evening on three occasions. Her urine seemed clear this morning. Should I be concerned?

If she passed blood in her urine then that would be concerning for things that can affect the urinary tract such as a urinary tract infection, urine stones or even a tumor. Further diagnostics would include a urine culture and abdominal imaging. I recommend that you have Bell evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. When there is persistent inflammation usually an infection or possibly even a small tumor inside the anal gland tissue is suspected and should be ruled out as soon as possible.
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

Why is my dog still bleeding when urinating after penal amputation?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to the surgery to some extent. Some degree of blood in the urine would be expected but not a lot. I do think that it warrants re-evaluation by the veterinarian who did the surgery to make sure that there is nothing wrong going on with the incision or surgical site as those are complicated surgeries. Some specks of blood would not be uncommon after having severely impacted glands emptied but you should have them rechecked if it persistts longer than 3-5days or the pain returns. A fiber supplement such as glandex can help prevent recurrent issues

The bleeding could be a sign of rectal trauma, for example from passing hard, sharp faeces, or it may be a discharge with blood from anal glands. If Hulu starts to bleed again, or if he is scooting after defecation, you should get him checked over by your vets.

This may be due to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a coagulation issue meaning that she is not coagulating her blood well enough which is concerning, among many other reasons. I highly recommend that you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat her accordingly. She could quickly become anemic which is why this is important and needs to be taken care of now. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!
