How often do unspayed female dogs go into heat and what is their cycle?

This is unusual in dogs. Typically smaller breeds have 2 to 3 heat cycles a year. I am assuming this is a new change in the frequency for her and that you are seeing vaginal discharge or bleeding. If so, it is possible these are not normal heats and that she has disease in her reproductive tract. I would recommend a visit to your family vet for an exam. Additional testing to evaluate her reproductive tract may be recommended such as vaginal cytology and abdominal ultrasound. She will be fertile for the rest of her life, and will be at risk of developing a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I'm not sure who told you she is too old to be spayed, but that's not true. There are many dogs who are spayed at nine years of age and older. Her anesthetic risk will have to be assessed by a vet, but surgery is not off the table due to her age. Plus if you leave her unspayed, she is at risk of a pyometra, which requires an emergency surgery that costs thousands. It's better to get her spayed now. I hope this helps.

Hello, she returns to not being in heat until her next heat. Dogs do not need to be bred at every heat period. Hormonally, her estrus will drop and her progesterone will remain high for several months. During this time she cannot be bred until her next heat cycle. Hopes this helps.

Hi, Dogs are in heat for 2-3 weeks and bleed for 7-10 days. On average dogs come in to heat every 6 months, give or take. Smaller dogs come in to heat more often and giant dog breeds may be only once a year. Goldens are large breed dogs so maybe every 6 months to a year

When she bleeds, she is in pre-estrus. This is the time where she prepares for estrus (heat). This means she will be bleeding for about 2-3 weeks, continuously. Then the bleeding gets less and her discharge will be more of a clear red-tinged discharge. This is when she actually will go into heat for another 3 weeks, approximately, and this is where is can conceive. You should wait until about two months after her heat cycle is over before having her spayed. No, this isn't normal to spot before going into heat. Dogs typically go into heat every six months, but they can go into heat sooner than that. It could be that Jada is going into heat now, or she could have something more wrong with her such as vaginitis or a pyometra (a life threatening infection of the uterus). Because I can't see her in person to say what is going on, I do think a visit with the vet on Monday is best to make sure everything is ok. If you see other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, thick discharge from the vaginal area, a swollen abdomen, increased thirst, and/or lethargy (all signs of a pyometra), take her into vet immediately. Dogs go through a heat cycle only twice a year or so, so the chances that Rain got pregnant from one incident at the dog park are rather slim. Mating in dogs takes about 20 minutes, and typically involves a "tie" which includes the dogs standing with their rear ends together.
