My senior dog is 9 and in heat. Will her heat cycles ever stop?

Anesthesia and surgery is a bit riskier for geriatric dogs and cats but as long as blood work was done, safe anesthesia and monitoring equipment is used she should do well. Bitches will continue to come into heat approximately every 6months until very advanced years - unless neutered when the cycles will then stop. Blood spotting is light and generally easy to clean up although some people aply diapers this is not entirely necessary

Yes, this can be due to a problem in her uterus. It could normal but since it’s been so long since she bled before there could be an infection or mass in the uterus or vagina. I recommend an exam and they may want to do an X-ray to make sure her uterus is normal size. I do recommend spaying her if you can so they can remove and examine the uterus and prevent her from getting a uterine infection or cancer. Also unspayed females have a higher incidence of breast cancer so that’s another reason for having her spayed soon. This is unusual in dogs. Typically smaller breeds have 2 to 3 heat cycles a year. I am assuming this is a new change in the frequency for her and that you are seeing vaginal discharge or bleeding. If so, it is possible these are not normal heats and that she has disease in her reproductive tract. I would recommend a visit to your family vet for an exam. Additional testing to evaluate her reproductive tract may be recommended such as vaginal cytology and abdominal ultrasound.
