Why is my female dog aggressive after puberty? What's the fix?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If this is a sudden behavioral change I would have her examined. She could be painful or not feel well and she is acting out because of that. It is better for her health to be spayed, she is at risk for an infected uterus which is an expensive surgical emergency. Hormones can affect temperament, so it MAY help but it might not be the solution. If her exam and blood work are normal, you can have her spayed then consider training and medications to control her aggression. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bella the very best!

I am sorry T is starting to become aggressive. I would highly recommend getting her spayed as a first step. This can help lower the hormone levels and help with aggression in younger dogs. I would taker her to the vet to make sure she is 100% healthy. Certain disease can cause aggression like pain/arthritis or even endocrine disease like hypothyroid. If she is spayed and healthy I would recommend involving a trainer. That way you can get one on one training for T that is in your home and can detect the exact cause of her aggression

If that is not corrected after surgery or you prefer not to spay her, I would highly suggest a qualified dog trainer or behaviorist that can help you with this in person. If they are not spayed then you should start with that. Hormones can certainly cause aggression. After the surgery it takes about 30 days for the hormone levels to decrease to a level that may change aggressive behavior. If that does not help then you should consult with a professional in-home dog trainer to help you sort out the root of the problem. I see you are in Puerto Rico. How long ago was it when she was spayed? If it was very recent, is she on pain meds? If this is real aggression, you may need to separate them until after the heat cycle and hope for the best. Sometimes problems can persist beyond that. Typically, households with altered dogs will have a lot less conflict than households with intact dogs. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. Because of this, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say.
