How much food should I give my 44lb puppy daily to avoid overfeeding?

Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)

Drax is so handsome! I would feed him according to the instructions on his bag of food. Each brand of dog food has a differently daily allotment required, and this will be found on the bag. Take the daily allotment, and divide it into two equal portions for him to fed once in the morning and once in the evening. Best of luck.

Yes that is a lot of food. I suggest you feed a good brand complete puppy food for medium to large breeds (depending on how big your dog will be) and feed your puppy according to the label on the food. It should give you a daily ration and you should then feed this over three to four feeds divided. This then would be the proper amount to feed.

It depends entirely on the brand of food, the amount recommended are written on the food label that you are feeding her, it is the daily amount requirement so you would need to divide this amount by 4 if you are feeding her 4 times a day.

There is a little variation among individuals but that is a good place to start. I can’t give you an exact calorie requirement without seeing Montana and deciding if she is thin, ideal or a little chunky for her frame. Ballpark is likely around 600 kcals per day. For most foods that’s 2-3cups. Ideally, divide that into three small meals per day. If you’d like a more exact recommendation, talk to your vet and she can calculate that for you. My first comment is that if Mocca has not been dewormed yet, I would do so because worms can cause a bloated abdomen and abdominal discomfort. If that’s already been taken care of, then yes, I agree she looks a bit full. Some puppies will eat everything you give them, even if it’s more than they really need. Beagles are a breed that are known for this. As such, I’d say just decrease your amount. Aim for the middle of that recommendation- about 145gm per day or about 45-50 gm per feeding. If that is still too much for her, drop to about 35 Gm per feeding. If she is not gaining weight or is looking too thin on these smaller amounts, your vet will likely just recommend feeding the small amount 4 times daily instead of 3 times daily.
