My puppy's stomach is bloated. How much food should I feed daily?

How much should my puppy eat in a day? The package of food (its specifically for puppies) it says that for her age i should provide 110- 180 grams in a full day, so 60grams per meal. I fed her 3 times i day but i see her stomach is really big compared to her little legs, also see her scting uncomfortable when resting, photo attached of her...

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My first comment is that if Mocca has not been dewormed yet, I would do so because worms can cause a bloated abdomen and abdominal discomfort.

If that’s already been taken care of, then yes, I agree she looks a bit full. Some puppies will eat everything you give them, even if it’s more than they really need. Beagles are a breed that are known for this. As such, I’d say just decrease your amount. Aim for the middle of that recommendation- about 145gm per day or about 45-50 gm per feeding.

If that is still too much for her, drop to about 35 Gm per feeding. If she is not gaining weight or is looking too thin on these smaller amounts, your vet will likely just recommend feeding the small amount 4 times daily instead of 3 times daily.

We really don't worry about puppies getting fat, as their calories should not be restricted during this important time of growth. It could be that Jarvis's belly is due to intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. Please give him a deworming treatment. As for diet, he needs a puppy formulated food. I recommend giving him Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. There is a daily recommended allotment of food listed on each bag, and I would divide it into three equal portions to be fed once in the morning, once at noon, and once in the evening. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely normal but I would feed less formula at each feeding and increase the frequency or number of feedings. That way he is getting smaller amounts and his stomach won't get so distended. Be sure to contact your Vet for a deworming protocol soon. I also suggest weaning bottle fed puppies sooner due to the constipation or diarrhea affects of formula. Have a good day!

Growing puppies need a lot of calories, and I do recommend feeding at least three times a day at this age. It is normal for them to poop 3 or even 4 or 5 times a day! As long as the stool is solid and well formed, this is perfectly normal. Every dog has a slightly different metabolism. If you are feeding the recommended amount on the bag, that is a good place to start. Over the next month you will want to watch his weight. If he seems to be developing fat rolls over this neck and shoulders, you might want to cut back a little. If he is becoming thin and you can see his ribs or hips, then increase the amount. You may have to increase or decrease his food over time as he continues to grow.

Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!
