Why is my dog yelping, constipated, and not feeling well?

Poor Delgado! The yelping indicates that something hurt or really upset him! I would recommend to take him in the see the veterinarian today if possible. He could be severely constipated. He would also be trying to pass something that is causing pain in the colon. He could also have a significant anal gland infection or tumor. It’s best to get this figured out quickly before something gets worse, especially since you have not seen him have a bowel movement in a few days. Hello, and thanks for your question. Poor Niko! First, I would ensure that Niko is truly constipated. Dogs don't actually get constipated very often, and the vast majority of patients I see who came in with concerns of constipation, turn out to have diarrhea. Diarrhea causes inflammation of the GI tract, which gives the sensation like they need to defecate - even if their colon is empty and nothing comes out. So, we tend to see a fair bit of unproductive straining with diarrhea. There are many common causes of diarrhea in puppies, such as intestinal parasites, parvovirus or simply eating things they shouldn't as they explore the world with their mouths! Constipation is possible, but again, pretty uncommon - especially in puppies. If Niko is bright, playful, and otherwise acting normal, you can offer him some bland food that's easy on his GI tract today. I recommend a combination of white rice and lowfat boiled chicken. You can add extra water to make this a gruel, which will help with hydration. This may actually help with either extreme - diarrhea or constipation. If the concern continues tomorrow, or if you see any other symptoms such as a decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, or excessive straining, then Niko should be seen by your vet. He may need meds to get his GI tract back on track, and it's important to make sure there's nothing more serious going on, especially since he's such a little guy! Hi ! When he goes outside does he pass anything at all ? If he doesn’t I would recommend to have Oaty checked over. He is a young dog, he might have eaten something that caused an obstruction or partial obstruction in his tummy, or get hold of a bone that now is causing him pain when he tries to go to the toilet. I think a full clinical examination is needed together with a complete clinical history. We can then have a shorter list of differential diagnosis and the vet will be able to prescribe an adequate treatment. Hope this helps !

Unfortunately I cannot legally recommend using a laxative on Sophie without seeing her in person. Because she has been constipated for a few days and is now yelping when trying to go, it's time to see the vet to get treated. Please take her into a vet today.

Poor guy. He may be a bit constipated. If he is squatting but no feces are coming out, then its best to take him to your vet to have him checked. He may need an enema to remove dried stuck feces in his colon so that he can freely go. You can also give an over the counter enema (from your local pharmacy) if you are up for it. Make sure he has free access to water and give him some canned food as well to increase his water intake. Constipation in young dogs is also often caused by intestinal parasites, so its good to have his stool checked by the vet as well. I hope that your fur baby feels better and is able to go potty soon! I'm sorry to hear that Bentley isn't feeling well. It is not surprising that he is not having bowel movements since he isn't eating. Possible causes of his panting, crying and loss of appetite could be due to orthopedic pain from arthritis or injury, organ dysfunction, pancreatitis (which can also be quite painful), among other issues. I strongly recommend taking Bentley to his vet for further evaluation to determine why these signs are occurring so that the most appropriate course of treatment can be started. Hello. If Nero was severely infested with intestinal parasites/worms, it is possible that the dead worms are causing a blockage. You can try feeding him a teaspoon of canned pumpkin with each meal as this can act as a mild laxative. Make sure there is no accumulation of feces at the rectum that can literally plug him up. Sometimes sitting in a warm bath of Epsom salts can help relieve a blockage, too. If he is still having problems passing feces tomorrow, please have him seen by your veterinarian.
