My dog had diarrhea, now constipated and crying. What's wrong?

This would make it difficult for him to hold the posture to defecate which would explain why he has not gone recently. Based on his exam findings, x-rays may be recommended and pain medication will likely be prescribed. Do not give over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Constipation can be a very serious condition, it can be caused by a physical blockage (foreign body like a bone) or a functional peristalsis deficiency of the intestines. In order to treat simple constipation, you should increase the fibers in the food (e.g. canned pumpkin) and can add a little mineral oil to the diet. I strongly advise taking your dog to the vet in order to check if there is a serious condition causing the constipation first.

It will be very easy for him to become dehydrated from the loose stool. He sounds nauseous by the way you described the lip smacking. I suspect that he is not eating well. He could be painful from gastrointestinal upset or it is common for small breed dogs to experience neck or back pain. While he could be constipated, a lot of dogs with strain with diarrhea only passing a drop or two. So it appears that they are unable to defecate. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Duncan isn’t feeling well. It doesn’t sound like he’s constipated, it sounds like more of the diarrhea. There just isn’t a lot left because he emptied his bowels. Since this has been going on for a few days and the diet change didn’t help I recommend taking Duncan to a vet for an exam and stool sample check. He could have intestinal parasites, a virus, a bacterial problem, or many other problems. Once the vet does an exam they can discuss testing (microscopic stool exam, blood work, radiographs). Poor Benzo! Sometimes after they have diarrhea it takes a little while to build up a full bowel movement so he could be straining simply because he has the urgency to go but there isn’t much there. On the other hand, with the hair he could be constipated. Either way fiber will be beneficial. You can give him 1/4 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to help balance his GI tract. If the chicken and rice, has any chicken broth or water in it then that could be why he is having decrease water consumption. If not, you could certainly add some water to his meal to help him drink more water. I am concerned that he is more lethargic. Since he is so small, I would have your vet take a look at him to assess his hydration and make sure he doesn’t have any parasites or anything more serious going on like parvo. Your vet will be able to give him some fluids if needed and prescribe his some medicine to help make him feel better. I hope this helps and he feels better really soon.

It’s been a rough few day for Max! It’s not unusual after diarrhea to have a few days without a bowel movement. The limping is concerning. I would recommend that he be evaluated by a veterinarian. They can look for signs of trauma/ fracture, infection, embedded foreign object etc.. They may prescribe some dog safe pain medication as well. Good luck and I hope he is back to normal soon.

The symptoms that you are describing could be signs of GI upset secondary to ingesting foreign material such as leaves, table scraps, or a new dog food. If Snowie is otherwise acting ok you can continue to monitor her and could offer her a bland diet such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice. If Snowie’s symptoms due not resolve or she becomes lethargic, inappetance, or starts vomiting I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. This could be a sign of something more serious such as foreign body obstruction, pancreatitis, etc. Hope this helps, good luck!
