My dog yelped and is limping. Is an ER vet visit necessary for paw pain?

As long as Xander is behaving normally, he can likely wait until your veterinarian is available. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to say what may have happened. he could have strained a muscle, stepped on something or simply stepped awkwardly. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, excessive licking or restlessness. These are symtpoms that should be addressed by your vet. if the paw becomes swollen, very painful or has bleeding/discharge then have Xander seen at the local veternary ER. You can place an e-collar (cone) on him if he is licking. There is nothing OTC that you can safely give. If he develops lameness, restrict his activity to just leash walks for elimination until he sees the vet.

Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.

If he is weight bearing and limping and not improving with rest, then I would get him seen to see if he has a foreign body or a soft tissue injury at your vet. If he is not wanting to use it at all then it needs to be seen immediately as there may be a fracture or torn ligament.

You can try and bathe his foot in very warm epsom salt solution for ten minutes at a time three times daily, as it may help for a foreign body to come out, if there is one in the paw. You need to check between the toes and pads for a thorn, stone, or any injury. If you can, palpate the toes to check for pain, which would signal either a sprain or fracture. This could also be caused by a snake bite or bite of another animal and now it may be infected. This is about all you can do until you get an appointment with a veterinarian (any vet!). You will need to get help to get him outside and into the car. If this is so bad that your dog is falling, then he should be seen right away by a vet.

If you can keep her from walking or running around by putting her into a crate, for example, and can so make her rest, then this will likely alleviate some pain. However if the pain increases or your dog appears to be very painful, you will need to take Saki to an emergency veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and pain control. We cannot legally recommend medications here, I am afraid.

Poor Maggie. I'm wondering if she injured herself running outside. You can wait until Monday to have her seen. Until then, rest her. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring hr right back in when she's done. Take her into the vet first thing Monday. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!
