Worms in my carpet! How to protect my pets and clean my rental?

Steam cleaning and shampooing the areas of the carpet that were in contact with any feces will help get rid of any eggs. You should disinfect any hard surfaces with a disinfectant cleaner. You can also disinfect the litter pan and all food/water bowls.

I can't blame you for not wanting to pick up the worms on your carpet, but unfortunately, that's the only way to get the job done. Consider putting on disposable gloves or using tongs to pick them up to dispose of them in the trash. I can't clearly see the worms in the picture that you've posted to determine which type of worms (roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, etc.) that you are seeing. Roundworms resemble spaghetti, tapeworms resemble grains of rice, and hookworms look like longer, flat noodles with an "o" shaped mouth. Make sure both Prissy and your cat are up to date on the flea treatments, as fleas transmit tapeworms. Use good hygiene, washing your hands after petting the cat and dog, and after scooping the litter box. Good hygiene will prevent you from getting the worms. I hope this helps!

The best way.to disinfect is to always wash hands, clean surefaces with a dilute bleach solution, clean or get new litter box, wash any bedding, place sheet over furniturr for now to wash later, and pick up feces right away and wash hands. Once treatment is all done, repeat and recheck fecal sample for testing

They may require you to bring Mystique in for an exam prior to giving you any prescription medication if you haven't been there with her recently. Oh no. This is a nuisance to deal with for sure. Tapeworms are contagious to people, but it would require ingesting (eating) a live worm to become infective. As long as you clean up the feces and use good hygiene (washing your hands and avoid putting hands in the mouth after touching your pet or any live worms), then you are less likely to infest yourself. Clean up the poop quickly and don’t let your pet around other dogs or cats to avoid transmission until you can get Coco treated. Best wishes and don’t forget to also get Coco on a good flea preventative (ie Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Vectra etc) at your vet to avoid further infection with tapeworms. Take care.

All the cats in the house will need to be treated with the deworming treatment and flea treatment. If two of the cats have fleas, then the third likely has them as well and needs to be treated. Even if the third doesn't at the moment, there will be fleas in the home, and it could easily get them, so it does need protection. In addition, it is possible that your third cat also has tapeworms. I would get an additional flea treatment and deworming treatment, and give both to all of them. As for treating the house, I would wash all the bedding in hot soapy water. Vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. In terms of your twins, keep them out of any rooms where you use the spray (same for the cats) until the spray is fully dried. If you do decide to flea bomb the house, remove the cats and your twins for the entire day. At the end of the day, it should be safe to bring them back home.
