My new cat has worms. How do I clean my home and protect my kitten?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

I just found a cat about a week ago only now to find little maggot looking worms falling from her butt and all over my furniture and carpeted flooring. How do I decontaminate my home and how do I get rid of these little monsters before my kitten gets them?

They may require you to bring Mystique in for an exam prior to giving you any prescription medication if you haven't been there with her recently. They may also recommend that you deworm your kitten prophylactically. Good luck, and I hope that you successfully get rid of those pesky tapeworms!

These little worms that you're seeing coming out of the cat's butt is most likely tapeworm segments. This tiny rice like segments are parts of a tapeworm that contain eggs, and they may move around. Cats get them by ingesting fleas, so be sure that both your stray cat and your kitten have flea protection on them. Vacuum up any tapeworm segments that you find, and throw the bag away or clean out the canister immediately. You should also call your vet to obtain a tapeworm dewormer, and they may require

My kitten has a new long worm after tapeworm medicine. What to do?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your kitties! If this worm is long and skinny compared to the tapeworm segments then it is possible it is a roundworm. Roundworms are treated with a different dewormer than tapeworms, normally with pyrantel or fenbendazole. You can get these medications over the counter but if your kitty has not visited a vet yet, it might not be a bad idea to bring them in for an exam along with a stool sample to check for other parasites that could be present and invisible to the naked eye! Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Moon. Congrats on the new kitten, but I'm sorry she has worms! Panacur kills roundworms (which is likely what she has), whipworms, and hookworms. You can get that over the counter. Deworm her now, and then again in two weeks to kill all the worms. After that, she should be dewormed monthly until she is six months old, and then she should be dewormed every three months. I hope this helps!

I would make sure that your cats and your puppy are both up to date on their deworming treatments. If they aren't, you will need to get treatments for them from the vet. As for cleaning the house, I would shampoo the carpets, and scrub any hardwood floors.
