My dog just had puppies. Why won't she stand, eat, or leave them?

That is very worrisome. Something is making her sick and it’s impossible to know the cause without a physical exam. I recommend to have Bella examined by her veterinarian today. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some mom dogs are just not good mom dogs. In the circumstances where the mother dog won't feed the puppies you can either try to make Bella lie down and attach the puppies to her nipples (check first that she is producing milk), or if she is refusing the puppies all together you will need to feed and nurse them yourself with a bottle. This involves bottle feeding a puppy replacer (not just milk or 'puppy milk') as well as wiping their penis/vagina and anus so that they will pee and poop. I recommend a visit with the vet for both mom and babies to make sure Bella isn't sick, and to check on the puppies and be shown how to properly bottle feed. Best of luck with Bella and the puppies!

Poor girl! She is likely worried about leaving her pups. You can try the puppy pads but just make sure the puppies can't get tangled up in them. You can also line the area with towels. She will urinate when she is ready. If you still don't think she has urinated 24 hours after birth, I would contact your vet to ensure she doesn't have an infection. Also, make sure she is eating and drinking okay. After birth, Dams can do peculiar things simce labor can be stressful and they have a lot of hormones and they are trying to care for their puppies. I would take her to the vet for an examination because she sounds very unwell and there coukd be a medical reason why she isnt bonding with the pups. You shouldnt force her to feed them whilst you dont know what is wrong as it could make her sicker. Common problems in bitches after whelping are mastitis in the teats, metritis in the womb, hypocalcemia or electrolyte imbalances. I would get her to a vet as soon as you can.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! I think you need to bring her in to your vet again and have her rechecked. I specifically would ask them to check her calcium levels. Low calcium can manifest as very bizarre behavior and can be life threatening if not treated. If it isn't low calcium and she isn't better, it is still best to have her looked at again. Sometimes it can take some time for first time Mother's to accept their babies. Just keep putting her in the whelping box and allow the baby to nurse. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

Digestive disturbances are common after birth but 2days is unusual for a nursing mother although some are very reluctant to leave pups to relieve themselves. I recommend taking her out on the lead for at least 15mins and monitor closely for any straining or discomfort

If Ladi recently had puppies and isn't eating or drinking, I would be concerned that she either has a puppy stuck (dystocia) or that she needs fluids, or may have low calcium. I recommend taking her to her veterinarian to be evaluated. Sometimes they just need a calcium supplement, but she may also need x-rays to make sure all of the puppies are out. Also, anytime a dog is pregnant and lactating, it is recommended to feed them puppy food due to the higher nutritional values. If she isn't on this, I recommend switching her.
