Why is my new mom dog hiding and restless after giving birth?

That is very worrisome. Something is making her sick and it’s impossible to know the cause without a physical exam. I recommend to have Bella examined by her veterinarian today. The doctor may need to do some diagnostics to looks for a cause. I hope they get it figured out quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

This could be due to fever or pain and I recommend a recheck by your vet as soon as possible. Low calcium levels can cause agitation and tremors but would be unlikely so soon after birth especially when you have started calcium already

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’ve seen it take up to a week for a new Mom to accept the puppies. Just calmly encourage her to lay with them. You can take a warm soft cloth after the feedings and stimulate them to urinate and defecate. And gently wipe them down two times per day until she starts doing it. If she never accepts the puppies I wouldn’t breed her again. I hope this helps! Good luck!

If this is the case, eclampsia or low blood calcium can result. This can be very serious and requires prompt care. Her veterinarian will be able to diagnose this with a blood sample. I would take her to the vet for an examination because she sounds very unwell and there coukd be a medical reason why she isnt bonding with the pups. You shouldnt force her to feed them whilst you dont know what is wrong as it could make her sicker. Common problems in bitches after whelping are mastitis in the teats, metritis in the womb, hypocalcemia or electrolyte imbalances. I would get her to a vet as soon as you can.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cookienear! Cookie needs to go to a vet immediately and be evaluated for hypocalcemia, which is low calcium. This is a serious condition after giving birth in some dogs. Once the diagnosis is conformed the Vet will give Cookie an injection to raise her calcium and prescribe medications. Be sure that Eris is eating and drinking approriately. She should be eating a high quality puppy food. She should have a small amount of vaginal discharge post birth but make sure there is not a large amount of blood or pass in the lochia. If possible you may want to take her temperature rectally, normal is 101-102.5. Also be sure the pups are latching on and nursing well that they don't appear sick or restless. If anything else is abnormal be on the whining I would recommend a veterinary visit for the whole crew just to make sure mom doesn't have a uterine infection, mastitis, or other complication of having puppies Good luck and I hope they all do well.
