My dog just had puppies. Why won't she go potty outside after birth?

Digestive disturbances are common after birth but 2days is unusual for a nursing mother although some are very reluctant to leave pups to relieve themselves. I recommend taking her out on the lead for at least 15mins and monitor closely for any straining or discomfort

I am concerned that Bella won't stand up, and while dogs will spend lots of time with newborn puppies, she should leave to at least go to the bathroom. To be safe, I'd have her and her puppies checked out by a vet now. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’ve seen it take up to a week for a new Mom to accept the puppies. Just calmly encourage her to lay with them. You can take a warm soft cloth after the feedings and stimulate them to urinate and defecate. And gently wipe them down two times per day until she starts doing it. If she never accepts the puppies I wouldn’t breed her again. I hope this helps! Good luck!

She may just want to go outside because it seems more comfortable, but I agree that's not ideal. If you do not have a whelping box set up for her inside I would make sure she has a comfy spot. She may prefer to be left alone - you could partially shut to door to a room so you can still supervise her and make sure everything is going okay. If she is actively pushing for more than 30 minutes or if she goes more than 4 hours between puppies I would recommend seeing a veterinarian to make sure everything is okay.

I am sorry to hear about Soska! It could be that she is feeling a little uncoordinated trying to maneuver into her normal spot. If you use fake grass or potty pads, just put down extra so that the potty area is bigger. You can also gently pick her up and set her where you want her to go -then praise her for going in the right place. Best of luck to you and Soska!

The panting should gradually settle after labour has finished . Unless it is just happening on and off which could be normal, if mum Is separated from puppies to go to the toilet for example. If it does persist she could be running a temperature or she could have more puppies in her tummy. This might not be the case, and it might just be normal for her but just to give you different scenarios so that if she continues to be unsettled you take her to see a vet. With regards to her water intake, always leave plenty of fresh water available and if you are worried about not drinking as she normally does add some water in her food. If Ladi recently had puppies and isn't eating or drinking, I would be concerned that she either has a puppy stuck (dystocia) or that she needs fluids, or may have low calcium. I recommend taking her to her veterinarian to be evaluated. Sometimes they just need a calcium supplement, but she may also need x-rays to make sure all of the puppies are out. Also, anytime a dog is pregnant and lactating, it is recommended to feed them puppy food due to the higher nutritional values. If she isn't on this, I recommend switching her.
