Why won't my dog get out of the car? Is he scared or in pain?

He may have bad hips or mild arthritis that was exacerbated after being confined to the car and he is stiff and tense now. Not wanting to jump up can be a sign if back or hip pain. Rest is the best thing since he is walking normally but if it does not improve then ibwiukd get him checked to see if needs medicine to help

Poor Hunter! It sounds like you've gone through a lot, and that fear may have manifested into new issues like you're seeing. I'd work on getting the part of the truck you want him to ride in to be "fun" again. Generally, this is done in steps with positive reinforcement. If Hunter has a favorite toy and treat, these are also helpful. You want to make the treat something special and not often given, such as pieces of hot dog, or lunch meat, and ONLY use them when training the association that truck = fun. You can start by just playing with him with his toy and giving treats nearby the truck for a few minutes at a time. From there, you can start trying to coax him to the truck by placing high value treats at the edge of where you want him to hop in, praising when he goes and eats them. You can then move the treats further back into the truck while asking him to hop in and get them, again, praising each time. From there you can move on to hooking him into any safety harnesses, and then taking short trips. This can be a long process, and if Hunter is scared by any step, going back to the previous and trying again from there is best. If he still is having trouble, or seems extra fearful of the situation, speaking with your vet and a local behaviorist/trainer is a good idea. They can both rule out any health issues such as joint pain, or monitor what is going on in person and recommend a tailored training plan to help get him comfortable again.

This is probably not related to the car itself but more to a growing anxiety of cars in general. Continue trying to coax him into the car. Alsways make it a positive experience with lots of treats and praise. When you do get him in the car take him somewhere fun like the dog park or to get a treat. If his anxieties are occurring in other areas of his life he may be developing generalized anxiety and may benefit from anti-anxiety medication. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snowball. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. I suspect that he is experiencing some joint pain such as arthritis. Based on his exam findings, x-rays may be needed as well. From there, treatment recommendations can be made to get him more comfortable. I hope this information helps!

If Jojo always would jump off the furniture before and has suddenly stopped I would worry about him being painful in one of his legs or his neck/back/spine. If this has always been his normal behavior then he is probably just scared of the distance. If you think Jojo is painful I would recommend taking him to the vet to get checked out.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bailey! I think Bailey may be in pain after the fall. He could have injured his back or neck and is afraid to go down the stairs because it hurts. Crying out randomly is common when dogs are in pain especially when their back and necks are injured. I would have Bailey seen by your Vet to see if he is truly in pain or traumatized behaviorally from the Hurricane. Poor Chloe! It sounds like she may be painful somewhere. I often see dogs with back or neck pain that act this way, because doing stairs or jumping is painful for them. It's also possible that she may have injured herself somehow, or has some type of orthopedic problem that makes these activities uncomfortable. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she may be able to determine what the problem is by palpating her neck, back, and legs, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.
