My dog is sluggish, won't jump or use stairs. Is she in pain?

It sounds like your dog has a problem with her back as that is a common sign of back pain. Dogs are usually reluctant to jump because it causes pain. Your vet can check her for back pain and then prescribe medications to help. She may need an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer, and/or pain medications to help. Also, it would be a good idea to restrict her activity for a few weeks, no running, jumping, etc. Hope she feels better soon!

To me this sounds like Echo is likely in some degree of pain. A change in activity is often a sign of pain. Most dogs don't actively whine or complain when they are uncomfortable or painful. If back or neck pain is present a dog won't always limp. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have medication prescribed by a veterinarian. Poor Gigi! In many cases, reluctance to jump up onto furniture or onto an owner's lap is a sign of back pain, or arthritis in the hips or rear legs. This can be true even if she isn't crying or whining, as many dogs who are painful don't make any obvious sounds like this. I would recommend taking Gigi to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a thorough orthopedic exam and may also recommend x-rays to help check for problems in her back or hips. If a problem is found, your vet can prescribe an anti-inflammatory or pain medication to help make her more comfortable so that she can get back to jumping on things the way she did before :)

This can be caused by arthritis - pretty much any joint can be affected as well as the spine. Your vet can perform a thorough orthopedic exam and x-rays to isolate the signs to a particular part of the body. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune disease also cause generalized joint pain and can be ruled out with bloodwork. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain which can be quite excruciating for them. Based your description of her sleeping more than normal, not wanting to do stairs and not running as much, this is a possibility. The veterinarian will examine her and determine if she is in fact painful. If so, x-rays may be taken. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. It sounds as she might be suffering from a back problem, probably a slipped disk in her spine which is common for the breed. you will need to take her to the vet, she will need pain killers for a couple weeks and will need to be in cage rest as well for this time.
