My dog won't eat after a loud night. Is lack of sleep the cause?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. You can try and add chicken broth or chicken breast to the food to see if this entices his appetite. If he still has no interest in the food, he may still be scared from whatever noise startled him. If this is the case, he will most likely eat normally within 24 hours. I am sorry to hear about your chihuahua. Because of her age and her symptoms (lethargy and decreased appetite) I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian. We can certainly see medical problems in older dogs that can cause these symptoms such as kidney disease, infections, liver disease, and more. An exam by your vet and some bloodwork may help to be sure there isn't a treatable medical issue. If there are no abnormalities found, then they may recommend some over the counter products that can help with anxiety such as Adaptil which is a pheremone product available as a plug-in or collar, Zylkene or Composure which are calming supplements, a thundershirt which is a compression vest that calms some dogs. And in some cases prescription strength medication may be necesssary from your veterinarian.

I would be concerned that Bell hasn't returned to normal after 12-24 hours. While heat injury is possible usually dogs have issues sooner than now such as seizures, diarrhea, bruising and/or collapse. She could have a problem with her GI tract, something stuck in her esophagus or even a respiratory issues causing her changes. If she continues to cough, seems lethargic/lack of energy, or has any vomiting, diarrhea or continues to have a decreased appetite today she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. I would try calling your veterinarian today as they sometimes have an oncall service or an emergency veterinarian on call to answer questions as well.

Hi. If he is acting abnormal, and its notike him, I would recommend an exam and labwork by your veterinarian. There are many things that can cause lethargy unfortunately. So without more information and testing, it is hard to say what it could be

You could try tempting Darwin to eat by offering some canned food or a different type of food, but if he also seems lethargic I'd be concerned that there might be a medical problem causing a decreased appetite. Unfortunately a decrease in appetite and lethargy are somewhat vague symptoms with many different causes. If Darwin still does not want to eat tonight or if any new symptoms develop (vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, change in urination) I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Since Lola has been sick for a few days now, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Just like people, pets can get sick for many many reasons. This could range from a bacterial infection to an intestinal blockage. Any pet that is not feeling well for longer than 48 hours should be examined since some illness can be life threatening. I suspect the new behavior is related to not feeling well but again, it's impossible to say. I hope this helps and that she starts feeling better quickly.

However, it could also be that this is Loki's typical behavior and sleeping pattern during the day while you are away from home. Dogs usually sleep most of the day and that is normal. If he is otherwise doing fine then he is most likely just fine. If you notice any other signs of illness such as inappetence, vomiting or diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Otherwise, he is likely just fine.
