My GSD won't eat dog food. Is human food making him lethargic?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As GSDs get older they don't require the same amount of calories as they did when they were a puppy. When this happens, they tend not to eat as often. This breed does not need to eat every meal or even everyday. They usually only eat more when they are working. So if you have a GSD that isn't working (police dog, herding, agility, etc) then he probably won't need to eat as often. Dogs can go long periods of time without eating a meal, unlike humans. As long as Arjun isn't vomiting, having diarrhea, lethargic, or losing weight, I wouldn't worry. Continue to offer his usual food and limit treats to once-twice daily (because they contain more fat than dog food). Kisses to Arjun!

Chapatis, oats, and rice are not a balanced or healthy diet for a dog. Dogs need protein and calcium as well as many other vitamins and nutrients, and that diet you provided doesn't give him that. I see that Max is six months old, so he needs a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for him. I would not give him human food any longer, and put him on a puppy dog food until he is 12 months. Then he should be on an adult dog food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I would also have a health check for him with the vet. He may be feeling unwell from have a nutrient deficient diet, or he could also have a medical illness causing the loss of appetite. Please keep in mind that even if it is a medical illness causing him to lose his appetite, the current diet you are feeding him is very poor and he needs to be on a puppy food. Dogs are carnivores and therefore should eat non-veg food, preferably commercial complete puppy food for large dogs or specifically for German Shepherd dogs. Try a proper dog food. If he still does not eat you need to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam as he may be getting ill.

German Shepherd Dogs are prone to a variety of stomach and gut problems including exocrine pancreatitis, IBD, food allergies, plus , like every dog, can get gastro-intestinal infections. You can take her off food for about 12 hrs then feed her bland food such as boiled rice and boneless boiled chicken in small portions and divided over several small feeds /day. If she does not start to eat or cannot keep her food in , then you will need to take her to your vet for an exam and appropriate medications.

As German Shepherd dogs are very prone to having food sensitivities and also are prone to exocrine pancreas insufficiency you should not feed him any food that is not dogfood, ie human food, treats, etc. The best is to feed specific puppy food for German Shepherd Dogs such as Royal Canin Maxi Puppy Dry Dog Food Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy Dry Dog Food or similar specific complete puppy foods for large dogs. As for quantities and how often to feed your puppy, , stick to the instructions on the bag as quantities depend on ingredients, weight of puppy and age. I would feed my puppy 3-4 times daily.

Not eating is typically one of the first signs of illness. It could be caused by a dental problem, systemic illness, infection, or injury. Without seeing Oggy in person, I can't say for certain why she is not eating much. Because this has been going on for 3-4 days, it's time to see the vet. I'd take her into a vet today. Best of luck.

Not eating is likely due to your dog being ill, not because he likes the puppy. I suggest you take Blue to a vet for a check up. Sometimes entire males pine for a female that may be in heat within a few miles of your house and then they stop eating. Castration would stop that and would be the most harmless reason. Unfortunately GSDs often have intestinal problems such as EPI (exocrine pancreas insufficiency) which could also be a cause for not eating. Take him to your vet for an exam to find out why Blue is not eating.
