Why is my 1-year-old GSD not eating his dog food but loves treats?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male

My one year old GSD is in his adolescence phase. He has suddenly lost interest in his food. He still loves to have his treats and stuff. He also loves eggs but has totally lost interest in his food food. Why so?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As GSDs get older they don't require the same amount of calories as they did when they were a puppy. When this happens, they tend not to eat as often. This breed does not need to eat every meal or even everyday. They usually only eat more when they are working. So if you have a GSD that isn't working (police dog, herding, agility, etc) then he probably won't need to eat as often. Dogs can go long periods of time without eating a meal, unlike humans. As long as Arjun isn't vomiting, having diarrhea, lethargic, or losing weight, I wouldn't worry. Continue to offer his usual food and limit treats to once-twice daily (because they contain more fat than dog food). Kisses to Arjun!

I would recommend offering a different food altogether and see if Arjun will eat a different food better. Sometimes taste or texture can cause animals to have a finicky appetite. You can also add chicken broth to the current food and see if he will eat the entire amount that way. Adding chicken breast is not a bad idea either but I would try and switch to a completely different dog food. If his appetite declines further, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I think your veterinarian has a point. You must not feed your dog human food as it will keep him from eating proper dog food. Please feed your GSD only good quality dog food. Do not give your dog raw eggs, only boiled eggs and only as a treat once in a while. Do not give him curd rice, as this does not have the proper nutrition for a dog. Please feed your dog proper dog food.

Why is my German Shepherd puppy refusing food? Is one meal a day safe?

This is an unusual problem for a young large breed puppy like Kilo. Most puppies are always hungry so the fact that he won't eat concerns me a little. Thats good that there's not likely worms but protozoal and viral infections will also make puppies not eat. It appears that an intestinal blockage is less likely as those dogs are generally very lethargic and vomiting. As its always better to be safe than sorry, I would recommend to make an appointment and have him evaluated. Since he cannot talk, you don't know why he's suddenly changed his eating habits. Puppies generally eat 3-4x a day and as an adult, feed him twice daily. GSD are prone to bloat so feeding smaller more frequent meals are better. Best of luck with baby Kilo, he's a cutie!

My active German Shepherd won't eat food, only treats. Should I worry?

Hermann is gorgeous! It's good that you are so on top of caring for him, but I don't think you have too much to worry about. As long as he is bright and active, and going to the toilet okay he is likely just being fussy. To be honest if he is getting treats then he is probably just holding out for those. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to change anything as ultimately this comes down to your friends. If he starts to be sick or gets dull at all then it may be worth having him examined by a vet.

Why won't my 1-year-old German Shepherd eat unless I hand-feed him?

A decrease in appetite can be an indication of illness. There could be something directly irritating his stomach, or generally making him feel bad. The possibilities arenumerous and a vet would have to examine him in order to narrow it down. It would be best to have a vet evaluate Rex first to make sure he is healthy before assuming other reasons for the lack of appetite. It's also possible that Rex is getting other food that he likes better than milk and chapati. Dogs will often shift their eating habits if they know that there will be better food available. You may check to see if there is any other food he may be getting. I hope that helps and all is well with Rex.

German Shepherd eats a lot but isn't gaining weight. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Keep in mind that you may perceive him as being eating a lot but his caloric intake may not be sufficient for his body weight. This is easily calculated with the following formula: Trooper's body weight (in kilograms [which is his weight in pounds divided by 2.2]) multiplied by 30 plus 70. This total you multiply it by 1.8 and the result would be the amount of calories that he should be eating per day to gain and maintain a healthy body weight. You can always find the caloric intake of the food you are feeding Trooper online. If you have any questions regarding how to calculate his needed caloric intake per day, contact your veterinarian. Why is my GSD not eating? Is it the new puppy or being unneutered?

Not eating is likely due to your dog being ill, not because he likes the puppy. I suggest you take Blue to a vet for a check up. Sometimes entire males pine for a female that may be in heat within a few miles of your house and then they stop eating. Castration would stop that and would be the most harmless reason. Unfortunately GSDs often have intestinal problems such as EPI (exocrine pancreas insufficiency) which could also be a cause for not eating. Take him to your vet for an exam to find out why Blue is not eating.
