My dog won't eat or drink and is very weak. When should I see a vet?

Gizmo is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe he is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Gizmo.

I'm sorry to hear Gizmo isn't acting himself! Without seeing him it is very hard to say. It sound like he could be painful and he's acting anxious. I recommend taking him to the vet for a full physical exam. Have them check for pain in his limbs or spine. Have them check for an ear infection or any evidence of fleas. Also have them check his anal glands. These are common areas that pets have problems and show signs of anxiety. I would also question if there have been any loud noises or thunder storms. Poor Zoie! I'm sorry to hear that she's sick. There are many different things that could cause these symptoms, so it's hard to say what might be going on without being able to examine her and run some tests. This does sound like a serious problem - if she's very weak, dehydrated, and not eating or drinking, she may die without immediate veterinary care. I would recommend taking her to see a vet right away. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like Yasmin is very sick. If it is at all possible, get him in to a veterinarian as soon as you can. He is probably dehydrated and in need of some IV fluids. His blood sugar also may be dangerously low. If you are absolutely unable to get him to a vet, you can see if he will eat or drink if you hold it up for him. Please do not force water or food into his mouth, especially if he's extremely weak or not responding, as this increases the chances of him aspirating (inhaling the food or water into his lungs and developing pneumonia). You can also try rubbing a little honey or corn syrup on his gums--if his blood sugar is low this may temporarily help. However, ultimately the underlying cause will have to be treated. I'm sorry you are having this issue with Cadby. Unfortunately I cannot advise any home treatment for you to do. He seems extremely sick and needs to see a vet as soon as possible. I would consider this an emergency situation. His symptoms are very vague and non-specific for any one disease process or illness. Pretty much anything can cause those types of symptoms. Remember, not everything can be cured or treated at home. Sometimes a veterinary exam is needed in person and this is one of those times. Please get him to a vet as soon as possible.

Lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea are often caused by a serious illness such as parvo, and can be life-threatening in a puppy this age. I know that costs are a concern for you, but Gizmo really needs to see a vet right away - I would be worried that she may not survive without veterinary care. This doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive visit; if you let the vet know that you have financial constraints, they can often come up with a fairly inexpensive plan for supportive care (including IV fluids and injectable meds for you to give at home) that will give her a fighting chance even with a serious illness like this. You could also see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help, or apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics: www.carecredit.com If going to the vet is not possible at all, then I would just try to keep her warm and comfortable and do the best you can to keep her hydrated. You can continue giving Pedialyte if she's able to keep it down, and you might also try offering her some warmed low-sodium chicken or beef broth to help encourage her to drink. Plain boiled chicken or chicken-flavored baby food can also be offered if she's interested in eating at all, as these are very bland and should not upset her stomach further.

In the meantime, if she is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken once it has cooled. This is not a balanced diet, but is okay for a couple of days to help encourage her to eat. You can add in some plain boiled white rice or potatoes as well if you like.
