My dog has a white, growing lump on his nose. What should I do?

It looks like this lump could simply be a benign tumor, but that's impossible to say without seeing the dog in person. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. She will likely need a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate to diagnose the mass. There is a benign growth known as a histiocytoma that is common in young dogs. Unfortunately, it has the same outward appearance as a cancerous growth called a mast cell tumor. The sooner a diagnosis is made, then a treatment plan can be formulated. Since the growth is on the nose, it would be best to bring Quinn into your vet for care. Tumors, fungal infections, abrasions, burns, etc can all cause signs like you are seeing, and since some are more serious issues, should be seen and treated, especially if the area is growing rapidly in size. Your vet can take a scraping or biopsy from the area to check under a microscope and see what is going on.

Poor girl. This most likely is either a mass (cancerous or benign) or an inflammatory response to a potential foreign body inside the nasal passage. It could also be an immune mediated condition. Since all of these things can look exactly alike, the only way to know for sure is to get this area tested by your vet. If there are any new things that you have introduced to your pet, then I would be suspicious that this may be a weird allergic reaction to that particular thing and remove it to see if this resolves the issue before seeking further testing. As long as this isn't bothering Piggy then you can take a few days to sort things out and then visit your vet if you think testing is the next best step. Your vet can then determine the best way to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or it may need to be removed.

Hi there! It does look like Fynn does have a small nodule/mass. This could be a benign growth such as a focal infection site or a malignant growth like a mast cell tumor. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Fynn evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis.
