My dog's white bump is now red, bleeding, and oozing. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 5 months old | 19 lbs

My dog has a white raised bump on him. He has had it for years and it's appears fine, but now has a red bum and is oozing blood and white discharge

This looks like a typica skin wart/skin tumor or cyst. Since it has been present for so long and has not grown at all, it is probably benign (non cancerous).

It looks as if the area has been irritated somehow, probably by your dog scratching at it, and is now bleeding and may be infected. Or, if it is a cyst, the white material may just be cystic exudate.

I would recommend cleaning the area with some dilute hydrogen peroxide then applying some antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection and to help it heal more quickly. Occasionally these need to be removed but only if they are a constant source of irritation or infection for the dog.

It sounds like that lump is a sebaceous cyst. Benign but will not ever go completely away without surgical removal. I would not consider this an emergency. Just keep it clean until you can get Sadie back to your vet for a recheck and to talk about removing it. Don't use peroxide to clean it. Just dilute betadine solution (1:10 dilution) would be fine.

My dog has a growing, red, bleeding bump on her nose. What is it?

This looks like she had an infected area under the skin (an abscess) that has ruptured to the surface. That is good as the infection will drain. Clean the area with antibacterial soap, rinse well and you can apply a thin film of antibiotic ointment. It should heal in a few days. What's this bleeding bump on my 10-year-old Dalmatian's head?

Although you cannot say for certain what a mass is without taking a sample and sending it away for histopathology, the mass in the picture looks most likely to be wart. This also fits with the history of bleeding once and a while, not growing in size, and not causing any pain or discomfort. This looks to be a benign skin mass or cyst. Repeated trauma from scratching is probably causing it to open up and bleed. Just noticed a bleeding bump on my dog's face. What is this growth?

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Dog's skin tag bleeding and oozing pus. Should I take him to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Some benign skin bumps, especially sebaceous adenomas can produce discharge. If the bump has been oozing puss and blood it is best to have your Vet re-evaluate it to either: 1) shave the fur, clean it and provide antibiotics or 2) discuss removing it since it has changed and now may continue to be a source of irritation and infection for Cooper. My dog has a sore, bleeding growth on his hip. What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like it could be a sebaceous cyst that got infected and ruptured. These are benign but sometimes they do keep opening and become bothersome to the pet until you surgically remove them. That being said, in a dog of this age, I always recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection and a needle aspirate if needed- just to make sure it’s something benign. For now, I recommend an E-collar for Hank so that he can lick/chew at it. Then clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide. Best wishes to you and Hank!
