My puppy has a scabbed bump. Is it a benign cyst or serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered

I have a 4 1/2 mo old rescue lab mix tht has a small cyst he has developed. It doesnt seem to "hurt" him when light pressure is applied. The cyst has recently developed a scab (pictured) but isnt in a spot he can bite on his own (3" behind rt shoulder). There is a larger treeing walker coon hound in the house that he plays with and has smaller "puppy scabs" on his tailbone are. Lastly the bump hasnt changed much in size. Any ideas as to what this is and the severity would be greatly appreciated

This looks to be a benign skin mass or cyst. Repeated trauma from scratching is probably causing it to open up and bleed. These usually do not need to be removed unless they become infected or are irritating to the dog. If the mass changes then I would be concerned.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
