My dog has a sore, bleeding growth on his hip. What could it be?

This could be just an infection though I am suspicious that there is a growth underneath causing this. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is severe and no home remedies are expected to improve this. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!

This growth looks like it's getting infected at the bottom. I recommend having this removed as soon as you are able. It has a small attachment to the leg so it should be able to be removed easily. Hank may get sick if the infection isn't controlled. You can keep it clean in the meantime but if it gets worse it will need treatment soon. Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks likely to be a cyst, which is a benign skin growth that can rupture and exude a thick proteinaceous discharge. I recommend having Roscoe seen by a Vet, as cysts can become infected when they rupture, and Roscoe may need a course of antibiotics. Your vet can then let you know if they have any concerns about the lesion when they’re able to examine it. In the meantime, keep it clean using soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and soak/wipe it clean a few times daily. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Moco! Due to his age, the appearance and the location it looks like a histiocytoma. Which is a benign mass in young dogs. They tend to resolve on their own in a few months but sometimes if they ulcerate, grow rapidly, become infected or bleed we recommend removing them. Another possibility is a mast cell tumor. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Sable to the vet to look at the growth closer and find out what it is. The vet can stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope to determine if it’s cancerous or not. Because the tissue/skin is fragile it likely won’t stop bleeding and may need to be surgically removed. I would leave it alone until the vet looks at it so you don’t disrupt the blood clot that forms. Good luck and kisses to Sable!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Gypsie has this going on. I'm concerned that a bleeding, hard lump could be a skin tumor in Gypsie. If she is an older dog a skin tumor is a little more likely. She could also have a pressure sore or infection causing this issue. If you post a picture of the knot it may be helpful so we can provide more advice. There's a good chance that Gypsie may need to see a veterinarian to address this issue but it's hard to say without a better description or a picture. Definitely consider an exam with your veterinarian as I'm concerned if this lump continues to bleed it may get infected or cause more issues.
