Dog's skin tag bleeding and oozing pus. Should I take him to the vet?

These growths look like skin tags in the pictures. We can never be 100% certain without a biopsy. If they keep breaking open and bleeding then I recommend removing them. The reason for removing them is just to stop him from scratching them and having them break open. Otherwise just keep the growths clean. This looks like a typica skin wart/skin tumor or cyst. Since it has been present for so long and has not grown at all, it is probably benign (non cancerous). It looks as if the area has been irritated somehow, probably by your dog scratching at it, and is now bleeding and may be infected. Or, if it is a cyst, the white material may just be cystic exudate. I would recommend cleaning the area with some dilute hydrogen peroxide then applying some antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection and to help it heal more quickly. Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks likely to be a cyst, which is a benign skin growth that can rupture and exude a thick proteinaceous discharge. I recommend having Roscoe seen by a Vet, as cysts can become infected when they rupture, and Roscoe may need a course of antibiotics. Your vet can then let you know if they have any concerns about the lesion when they’re able to examine it. In the meantime, keep it clean using soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and soak/wipe it clean a few times daily. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't call this a skin tag based on appearance alone, but it's still possible. I think it's more likely a sebaceous adenoma (a benign skin mass), but the only way to positively identify it is to surgically remove it and send it to the lab for analysis. I recommend talking to your veterinarian about the possibility of doing this. It may be that the mass has been injured or become infected. I would recommend to wash it with antibacterial soap daily and you can apply a topical antibiotic. I would still recommend to get Roscoe to the vet as early as you can. The doctor may recommend to have the mass removed and tested. Please post again with any future questions and I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Many skin masses can look the same. Red dermal masses, like this one, can be benign or malignant. Some possibilities are an inflamed sebaceous adenoma, hemangioma, histiocytoma or it could be a Mast Cell Tumor. Since it showed up quickly I would have Oscar seen by your Vet. They can decide if aspirating it (sticking it with a needle and sending the slides to the lab) or removing the mass and sending it for biopsy is best. These are benign but sometimes they do keep opening and become bothersome to the pet until you surgically remove them. That being said, in a dog of this age, I always recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection and a needle aspirate if needed- just to make sure it’s something benign. For now, I recommend an E-collar for Hank so that he can lick/chew at it. Then clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide. Best wishes to you and Hank!
