My intact dogs are whining. How do I prevent unwanted puppies?

Chico is whining because he wants to mate with the female in heat. You can remove the female in heat from your home until she is out of heat (have her stay with a friend), or have him stay somewhere else until she is out of heat. The way to stop this permanently is to have him neutered and your female dog spayed.

All you can do is keep them separated - best to take one of them to another location (a family or fiend's house). I suggest you have them spayed/neutered (or at least one of them) or this will be an ongoing problem.

Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. If you are still concerned that there may be a medical problem then I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian. If you are unable to have one or both of the dogs spayed/neutered then you will have to be diligent about keeping them separated while the female is in heat. I would recommend keeping the female in the house and the male outside because if you leave the female outside there is a chance another male dog could mate her. I hope this helps. You need to keep them completely separated all day, everyday for three weeks until she is out of heat. The male can mount her quickly and breed her if they are together for even a short amount of time. You may want to send him to a friends house or her to a kennel to keep them from breeding. Unfortunately you cannot unless you have him neutered. Because she is in heat, he wants to mate with her, and even if he mates with her again, he will continue this behavior as long as she is in heat. My advice is to have him neutered after her heat ends. If you cannot stand this noise, it may be best to have him stay at a friend's house until her heat is over. Best of luck.
