My dog whines and breathes hard after exercise; is she overtired?

If you have noticed a change in her breathing pattern and she appears to have labored breathing, I would recommend getting her in to be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be over excited and would likely benefit from increased activity. Sometimes it just had to do with their age. I recommend that you perhaps increase the length of his walks and also the frequency. Also, you could consider activities such as playing fetch to try to burn some of his energy. However, if this continues, other possibilities like a respiratory condition should be considered. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sadie Blue. She sounds extremely painful. There is a potential that she is still over heated as well. Ideally, she should see a veterinarian tonight. She needs pain control and to see if anything more serious is going on with her such as heat exhaustion. Being over weight, it will be more difficult for her to cool herself. Be sure not to give her any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps you are able to get her feeling better soon. Good luck!

Lola may just be worn out and over-tired from playing so hard with the other dog. One thing I would be concerned about is if she may have become over heated while playing. If you are able to take her temperature rectally it would be very helpful. Normal temp for a dog is 101.5. Anything over 103.5 would be concerning enough to take Lola to the vet. You can also monitoring her respiratory rate. Count the number of breaths she takes in 1 minute, anything over 60 would be concerning (unless she is panting). If her temperature and respiratory rate are normal then I would recommend monitoring her for the next 12-24 hours. If she is still acting abnormal after this time then I would suggest take her to the vet.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Lassie may have gotten very hot outside and needs to pant to cool off. Dogs cannot sweat to release heat, so they have to pant to breathe off heat. As long as Lassie can settle down and act normally, eat, drink, etc, he should be OK. I hope this is helpful!
