What causes my dog's wet, dark diarrhea and what should I feed him?

Diarrhea is a quite aspecific sign and there are many different causes. Dietary indiscretion, infections (bacterial, viral or parasitic), inflammatory conditions (i.e. IBD), and neoplastic diseases are some of the possible causes. The dark colour might be a sign of gastro-intestinal bleeding and might need vet attention asap. If Chewie is otherwise fine, I would start him on a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) but if his diarrhea is still present in 12-24 hrs or if he starts vomiting or getting lethargic I would have Chewie checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. I'd give him Glandex for the anal sac problems, and I can give you a home remedy for the diarrhea. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

As long as he is otherwise well I would restrict jim to a bland diet such as boiled chicken and brown rice and add some pumpkin to restore normal bowel movement. Probiotics are also very helpful (natural yogurt if you can't source fortifora). Any lethargy, vomiting or reduced appetite would indicate the need for a vet check.

Poor Hershel! It's common for dogs to develop diarrhea if they eat something they are not accustomed to. It's also possible that he could have parasites (such as worms). Aside from being messy, diarrhea can lead to dehydration over time, especially if it is accompanied by vomiting. The bland diet is a great idea, and you can add boiled low-fat chicken breast for additional protein. It would be ideal to have him seen by a vet as soon as possible, especially if he becomes lethargic, continues to vomit, or develops other symptoms. I hope he feels better soon!

This could be due to a number of things, most like;y him eating something that disagreed with him, something too rich that he isn't used to eating. If you changed his dog food recently or introduced wet food to his diet this could be what started it. Other possibilities include parasites, food allergies, or bacterial infection. Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days, plain cooked white rice mixed with an equal part of plain boiled chicken breast, unseasoned, or plain hamburger, cooked and the fat rinsed off. If the symptoms persist or get worse, including developing new symptoms like diarrhea, lethargy and loss of appetite, get him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and fecal analysis.
